Sanctuary is the hauntingly beautiful new album from Saxophonist Christian Forshaw. Featuring the choir of King's College, London, it is a highly personal and evocative exploration of the sound world of sacred music and includes arrangements of works by Machaut, Vaughan-Williams, Ireland and others.

Sanctuary
Sanctuary is the exploration of a sound world which has fascinated me for a long time. My musical experience as a chorister led me to seek the purity and intensity of that music in my own playing and I set out to produce a recording which enabled me to explore those qualities.
I first began working with the church organ in 1995. I was intrigued by the way the saxophone could sit within the sound of the organ, but could also add a far more expressive dimension. The sound of the organ is static once the key is pressed, whereas the sound of the saxophone is ever changing and moving.
In the Summer of 2002 I was invited to perform in the "FEVA" festival in my home town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. It was then that I began to include voices in the arrangements and wrote the setting of the Nunc Dimittis to include the St John's Choir.
After a very encouraging response from the choir and audience I set about writing more material to record for this CD.
